This can be a frustrating experience! You hear messages on the radio like:

Did you know that this is a law? If you want to apply for credit, the dealer must take your application, so this is no big deal!

• Everyone Approved Regardless of Credit History!
Sure, you may be approved regardless of credit history (at some really high interest rate or with megabucks down)! If this is advertised, then everyone must be approval. If they aren't, this may be considered a deceptive act and violates state and/or federal laws.

• Bankruptcy, Divorce, No Problem!
The divorce may not be a problem, if you just filed for bankruptcy, that will be a problem. You are barred from applying for credit during a bankruptcy proceeding without obtaining approval from a bankruptcy trustee or a judge. If your bankruptcy has been discharged, then you might be able to get car credit, but it will cost you.

Basically, be ready for some disappointment. Not everyone can do what they claim, but there are legitimate dealers that can and will help you get financing. You may pay more for the credit. Also, remember that it is often difficult to convince a lender to lend money to people with poor performance histories. Lenders don't want your car; they want their money back. So, keep this in mind as you visit dealers.
